Shades Creek

Homewood, Alabama

The Shades Creek restoration project successfully improved streambank stability and water quality in the Cahaba River Basin in Alabama and provided a demonstration site for a healthy urban stream in the Birmingham metro area. The natural channel design project includes channel relocation and reconfiguration to create stable morphology and floodplain connection, streambank bioengineering, riparian buffer establishment, invasive plant control, and in-stream boulder and log structures for hydraulic energy management and aquatic habitat enhancement. The project serves as a long-term demonstration site for ecosystem restoration monitoring and education.
